Living on purpose

A long time ago I went on a course called “Living on Purpose and not by mistake” which was run by some guy who’s name I now forget.  I know he’s a good buddy of Dr. David Molapo (who, amongst other things, is an excellent motivational speaker).  Anyway one of the excercises we did was to draw a picture of our future, what we’d dream it could be.  Then, a while ago, I posted something similar… basically, if I had no worries, and could spend the rest of my life living in luxury, being served whatever I wanted/needed, what would I do?  I’d probably start off just relaxing for a long while, but once that was over, what would I do?  The blog was entitled “What did I learn today?

Today, I read a blog by Eduard Penzhorn entitled “Low employee moral hitting IT industry“, where one of his commenters (Kevin T) referred to Ruari‘s article about Champions.  Its a really good article, and deserves some mention… So if you’re wondering what to do with your life or wondering how you ever got to where you are because there’s just no passion in it anymore… take a quick look there, its got some good points and its well written. πŸ™‚

How to keep busy…

In my case its a matter of doing all of the following:

  • Get Married
  • Start leading a home group (a.k.a bible study)
  • Start leading a choir (and doing admin for a bunch of muso’s)
  • Do a whole bunch of house sitting (3.5 weeks in just under 3 months)
  • Start a business by mistake

I’ll try post more later… πŸ™‚

GMail

And we break our regular transmissions to bring you this news:

I got an invite to GMail a week ago, and I now have 4 invitations to give away.  Anyone interested?  Leave me a comment on the blog.

So far I must say that I’m VERY impressed with it… its not like any other web mail that I’ve seen.  Its very fast, highly user friendly, and quite a nice way to handle e-mails.

[Update: All the invites are now gone… I’ll post more as I get more (if i get more?)]

Extreme Improv…

Ok, so this really got me smiling… check out Improv Everywhere, a group in New York (NY), who do “improv” acting in kinda random places… not staged – like in a shopping mall, or in a Starbucks (like this one called The Moebius)

I saw this on the VS Data Team’s blog today entitled ‘This was *awesome* (by yag)‘… I’ll quote a bit here:

“[A] guerilla group of performance artists who do live shows on unsuspecting New Yorkers. Gotta agree with him, my favorite is The Mobius as well. To quote the site: ‘Improv Everywhere agents created a living moebius strip in the Astor Place Starbucks. Seven undercover agents meticulously repeated a five-minute slice of time for twelve consecutive repetitions. Starbucks employees and patrons were frightened, confused, and ultimately entertained as they found themselves stuck, without escape, in the middle of a time loop.'”

GeoCaching….

The guys in homecell were going to go on a mini-hike (5km) tomorrow, but its turned out that only Sean, Charlie and I can make it.  So we were thinking of other things to do, and Sean suggested we just go have breakfast somewhere.  I still wanted to do something out doors, so I was thinking of where we could have breakfast and still do something outdoors.

One of the places I thought of was at the Lonehill shopping centre (they have some cool places to eat there, and its on the edge of a small “nature reserve” thingy where you can go climb up the “lonehill koppie”)… when my mind suddenly remembered that there is a Geocache near there… So I quickly MSN’ed the other two and we’ve organised to go get breakfast and go find some geocaches.  We’ve got 6 we’ve printed out, a few difficulty 1, 2, and 3’s, and one difficulty 5.  I’m kinda excited to go find the treasures and add our own bits and pieces to them.

I’ve known about GeoCaching for about a year now, and have wanted to do it pretty much since the instant I read about it.  And now, finally, I’m going to actually go do it!  I’m SERIOUSLY excited. πŸ™‚

What a nice way to start the weekend. πŸ˜€

After blog mints

Rory had a brainwave on Sunday – its the “After Dinner Mints” of the blogworld.  A great way to get all those “Hey, I saw this cool site” or “This is a great link” comments into the blog without actually adding hundreds of extra one line blog entries each day. πŸ™‚

And thus I’m doing the same…

After Blog Mint [?] :

A saw a cool de-stressing/relaxation “game”, which works really well, unless you suffer from OCD.  Original link was from Matt which links to a student’s site at the University of Houston’s – College of Hotel and Restaurant Management. I could imagine the load that that server would eventually get, so I put a copy on my website – its called BubbleWrap.

Face manipulation

Have you ever watched those FBI/CIA/OCA (Other Covert Agency) programs on TV where they have this funky software that they use to either build up a the face of a suspect, or can see what a suspect would look like after some facial reconstruction/hair colour/style changes?

Well, now you can do that yourself using http://www.morphases.com!! They have a fairly small set of faces, but the software is quite cool, and aparently they’re going to be adding more faces soon.

Be warned… don’t go there unless you’re prepared to spend a significant amount of time having fun…

I’m in the middle of trying to build a face that looks like mine… it quite a bit more difficult than you’d think it might be, especially over a slow-ish internet connection.

An update (finally)

Well, so much is happening, and I’ve not done an update…  I have a partially completed “Wedding Update”, but too much happened and I don’t want to leave stuff out or mess up details… the next thing I know I’ll find myself sleeping on the couch again.  (Um, actually its not “again”, coz I’ve not done that yet.  Christie’s too nice to do that to me)  Anyway, back to the point… I’m going to skip writing about the wedding till I have time.  I’d also like to upload some pics from the wedding to coincide with the wedding blog entry, so I’ll have to spend some time at home getting the pics and details ready.

In other news: My company has made 2 big sales!  One to Denel (announced internally on Friday), where our software is now going to be going into their entire set of companies/divisions.  It was used in about 8 of the over 30 companies… and the deal is worth between R50 and R100 million. (That’s a big enough ballpark not to cause any concerns over leaking out the details – not that we were told to hold off the details, but I’d rather be a bit more on the safe side)   And the other sale is to “SAS” or “Siemens and Forecia” (or something that sounds similar)… the “SAS” sale is WAAAAY smaller in value than the Denel sale, but its aparently a really good foot into new/other market areas for us. (Don’t quote me on that I’m just clueless underling, so I know nothing.  On top of that, all comments are purely my own views and not those of my company, or any company related to my company, or anyone else’s for that matter (unless otherwise specified(your milage may vary(batteries not included))))

I want to work for Microsoft :)

A quick blog…

Two cool recruiters at Microsoft (ZoΓ« and Gretchen) started a blog recently… It has a whole bunch of information on Microsoft interview questions, etc….  All the links above are in response to their “Search Engine Baiting” post.

And incase you’re wondering, I’d love to work at MS – sounds like they have an awesome attitude towards development and customers.  I had a few friends of mine from varsity start working there about 4 years ago (I’ve lost contact with them now), but they all seemed to love it.

Back!

WOW, there’s a lot to talk about… but I’ll get to that in time.  A brief synopsis of the last week and a bit follows:

The wedding was great, we really enjoyed it.  The honeymoon was awesome, its a great place to stay – really relaxing.  Came back a day before we expected, but we got to do some shopping for our home which we wouldn’t otherwise have done.  Charlie, John, and Keri left for the Singapore LTT. It was great to be back at church – the Jazz picnic was cool.  The public holiday on Monday was an excellent day to catch up with household stuff, and prepare for the week.  Tuesday was great, the first day in the “normal” routine of life as a married couple.  Home cell went well (Helen spoke), and that brings us to today. πŸ™‚
