Travelling…

I just realised today that I’ve not mentioned a thing about my up-coming trip overseas… Tomorrow Christie and I leave… our trip takes us to London (Via Paris – just a stopover and plane change, not a visit).  From London we’re either going to catch a lift with the in-laws or take the tube and a train to Southend-on-Sea, where Christie’s grandmotner lives.

She’s not doing so well, which is what caused our trip (which was planned for early next year) to be moved to December.  So while its not a happy reason for taking a trip, we’re going to make the most of the stay and try get into London for a day or so to see some touristy sites.

We leave for London tomorrow (21st), arrive there on the 22nd, and leave London again on the 27th.  Again our flight goes via Paris but this time (unlike on the way to London) we are stopping in Paris and being picked up by my mother (who lives in Brussels), and we’re going to go stay with her for about 7 days visiting various touristy sites around there.  (Brussels, Brugges, Amsterdam, etc)

We leave from Paris again on the 4th of January and arrive in Johannesburg on the 5th.  So , I hope you have a very Merry Christmas, and a wonderful new year!  I’ll be contactable via e-mail over that time but considering the amount of touristy things we’ll be doing, I doubt I’ll respond too quickly.

Here are some links to the various place’s we’re going…

I hope the links are useful… They have info on great places to see, things to do, where to buy stuff, how to travel, where to stay, etc… and if you find anything special out yourself, you can just add it to the page.  (That’s the joy of Wiki’s)  I’ll post an update (with pics) when we get back..

Free software for smartphones from Handango…

I *knew* there was a reason I was subscribed the the Windows Mobile Team‘s blog….

Today they posted an entry about Handango giving away free software… Check it out! It looks like they’re doing PalmOS apps too…

I’ve already started downloading my first SmartPhone app… Ok, so I don’t have a smartphone yet, but I will. (As soon as I either decide to move to MTN who are advertising the iMate SP3, or as soon as Vodacom get their act together and start offering the phone.)  But until then, I’ll be stocking up on free software for my soon-to-be new phone each week till 31 January 2005.

New MSN Search

I heard that MSN were launching a new search, but I just read about the new Beta of their own algorithmic search engine (which you can find at MSN Search Beta) which has some cool features… I like the advanced search – you get to pick results near where you live, and can choose how you want your search weighted (by accuracy, popularity and how recently the page was updated)

Very cool… πŸ™‚ I found out about it from this post by the MSN Search team.

10 Years of freedom…

Ok, so I had to make at least one post with that title this year… No matter how much that slogan is beginning to irritate the heck out of me, I just had to do it.  (Anyone know if there is a “Slogans Anonymous” or something like that I should check out?)

I saw a link via slashdot about Press freedom, which linked to the Third Annual Worldwide Press Freedom Index.   And South Africa is listed 26/167… So we’re in the top 16%.

Ok, so I just now thought I should probably check to see where we were last year (2003)… We were 21/166 (Top 13%). And in 2002 we were 26/139 (Top 19%).

So the over all trend is that we’re moving up in regards to press freedom, not that I guess you could draw too much of a conclusion from only three year’s data, especially since comparing by % kinda gets affected by how many countries were ranked. Anyway… At least we’re kinda free. πŸ™‚

WWDN, an Emergency signal, and IE crashes less?

Three cool items I’ve read recently…

Will (from WWdN – WillWheaton.net for the uninformed :P) posted some links to a reading he did at Gnomedex 4.0 in his post entitled “Just A Geek audio and video from gnomedex” – its a really great listen, and quite humorous.

I loved the brief mention of “Poser geeks” at the end – those who label themselves geeks because its the “in thing” or it “seems like a good idea” instead of simple just BEING a geek.  Anyway, as one who started with computers at the tender age of 6 (or thereabouts), I can fully understand the desire to distinguish between the “true geeks” and the wanna-be’s. πŸ™‚

The next thing that I found really cool was on Slashdot (I’m sure they don’t need any more google juice so I won’t link to them directly, anyway its not like I have much to give them and as a third reason – “they’re not part of the borg, nor do they tend to sympathise with the borg in any way so therefore they shall not be linked to”) Ok, but back to what I was really saying… they had an article about the TV that was producing an Emergency Signal which was picked up by a sattelite(?) and relayed back to emergency services in the US, and so the poor owner ended up with various members of the law enforcement community at his door… (At least the manufacturer gave him a new TV)… [It looks like local news has picked it up too, coz I just saw it on IOL too]

And finally, who say’s IE is buggy… Well, perhaps its buggy in many obscure ways which are not necessarily likely to be the first features thought of when its time to test the product.  But as an e-mail to BugTrack entitled “Web browsers – a mini farce” details.  He created “a trivial program to generate tiny, razor-sharp shards of malformed HTML.”

So basically the test was to see how the browsers handle bad input. His summary “All browsers but Microsoft Internet Explorer kept crashing on a regular basis due to NULL pointer references, memory corruption, buffer overflows, sometimes memory exhaustion; taking several minutes on average to encounter a tag they couldn’t parse.”  And he also says “It appears that the overall quality of code, and more importantly, the amount of QA, on various browsers touted as “secure”, is not up to par with MSIE; the type of a test I performed requires no human interaction and involves nearly no effort. Only MSIE appears to be able to consistently handle malformed input well, suggesting this is the only program that underwent rudimentary security QA testing with a similar fuzz utility.”

I guess its a small consolation in the light of all the other security flaws in IE.  IE does the basics right, but seems to have some hassles with the more complex stuff (like “security” :P), while the rest all fail with the basics.  But then if they can’t get the basics right, how do you know that the more complex stuff isn’t just as bad?

SNO Deliberations…

[Update: Thanks to Colin for noticing that my link to the story was broken… Its now fixed]

For non-South African’s the SNO probably won’t mean much… Here’s a brief overview – SNO = Second National Operator… Currently we have only one fixed line telephone provider in South Africa (Telkom) which used to be(?) a 100% state run compan and is currently a well protected monopoly.  In 2002 a competitor was to be announced, so it would still be a controlled market (only 2 players allowed) but there would be some kind of competition.  Its now 2004, and the government minister who should have resolved this 2 years ago is still playing games…

This morning I read an article from yesterday on ITWeb, entitled “Pontius Pilate syndrome” by Rodney Weidemann, which has some choice quotes about the latest developments – She’s announced that she’ll award the SNO licence on the 17th of September.  Here are some of them:

“Rumour has it that Matsepe-Casaburri is hoping to find a financial institution of some kind to take up the remaining shareholding in the SNO [….] Except that the idea of a financial institution, which has no experience in the telecoms game, running the SNO is almost as ridiculous as the idea of a minister with no telecoms experience running the communication ministry.”

“She has instituted a time frame which cannot possibly be met, is asking the impossible of the various members of the SNO and is then going to turn around, much like Pontius Pilate, and wash her hands of the entire debacle, saying: ‘It’s not MY fault.’ […] Except that we have known the minister’s ways for too long, and will not be fooled by this. Her ineptitude is the real reason we still have no valid competition for Telkom, years after we were supposed to.”

Pet peeves being addressed

A while ago I posted about one of my Pet Peeves (Microsoft announces CD’s that you can order online, but only after you go online do you find out that you can’t get them shipped to South Africa)… Shortly after that the South African version of the MSDN Flash they announced that you could order the CD’s that I was looking for, and they’d ship them to South Africa for a small (around R35?) fee which was great.

With XP SP2, I was wondering how the heck I would get my home PC updated since I’ve just moved and I don’t have a phone line in the new place yet (and it will probably take over a month to get one installed)… On Friday I was browsing Microsoft South Africa’s site and I noticed a press release entitled “Windows XP Service Pack 2: Fact Sheet” which kinda hides the exciting content a bits, which say “Microsoft South Africa would like to encourage users to order a free copy of the Windows XP SP2 CD from its local call centre (0860 2255 67) and from mid-September CDs can be collected from Makro; Incredible Connection; Game; Dion and CNA – free of charge”!

This morning I saw that Matt Hausmann blogged about it, so I thought I should too. πŸ™‚

And once I’ve put my PC back together I’ll be giving Microsoft a call.

Great links…

Armand (who always seems to post interesting blog entries), blogged recently about “A Game in 96K” (which looks interesting but doesn’t work on my work PC… I’ll have to take it home tonight and see if it will be happier there)… In that post he mentioned that he found out about the game from “Hello_World“… which is a REALLY interesting blog (its kinda linked to “Jo’blog” which is also fun).  They have some really fun thoughts on some of our current Ad’s in South Africa.  They also linked to “Story Blog” which is great… I liked the way D’ave from “Hello_World” explained that blog it was made “with the objective of creating a collection of stories that can be used in presentations, or explaining a concept to an inept client“…

Check out “The Ambulance Down In The Valley” for a great example! πŸ˜€
